And then you'll need to wade though another 7-10 chapters to move the next inch. The storyline unfolds very slowly because the book's structure uses these very brief chapters which might move a particular character like an inch along the plotline. It takes a very realistically told story and somehow just brings my inner critic right out. What was the point of Roderick in this story exactly? I feel like maybe I lack imagination, but is this ghost supposed to be a foil for Thomas somehow? Why not just use interior dialogue or some other believable device. Mysticism/magical realism is woven throughout the book, so those who like that, will be pleased. some are interesting and well developed (here's looking at you, Wood Mountain and Patrice) and plenty are not (Hay Stack, Millie) and a bunch just seem superfluous, as though the story would be better off without them. I just enjoyed the journey more.Įrdrich introduces a wide array of characters. That one I gave two stars, so The Night Watchman was an improvement, but to be honest, a lot of my criticisms of LaRose still hold here.
